 Valley Elementary Fourth Grade

Curriculum Highlights

Language Arts: The fourth grade language arts curriculum is heavily focused on vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, and writing aspects of literacy. We read and report on several different genres of literature through our “Share a Book” activities. Each year, each student writes and illustrates an original children’s book.

Technology: Students practice keyboarding several times each week. We use technology to deliver reports and power point presentations of published work.

Math: The fourth grade math concepts are covered through direct instruction and the use of small groups. Technology is utilized in the classroom for individual practice of math concepts through a variety of learning games and assessments.

Social Studies: The fourth grade social studies curriculum focuses on the students and how they relate to others in their families, classroom, school, community and their citizenship as a Utah resident with Utah history at the core. Each spring students have the opportunity to participate in Pioneer Day activities. Students dress in pioneer costume and set up a trading post in the school’s gymnasium.

Science: In the fourth grade students study the plants and wildlife indigenous to Utah. Fourth graders also study weather, water cycle, rocks and minerals, soil and fossils.

Art and Music: Fourth graders participate in art lessons and weekly music classes.

Opportunities for extension of learning: Technology is used in the classroom to take virtual field trips. We also take advantage of other hands on learning opportunities provided by the Utah Natural History Museum on the Move, Utah Division of Natural Resources, small extension groups which are available to us, and The Living Planet Aquarium to supplement classroom curriculum.

Fourth graders enjoy seasonal field trips to the Environmental Center twice a year to explore Utah’s climate, plants and animals. We learn how to cross country ski, snow shoe, shoot a bow and arrow, and hike using geo-cache technology.

PE/Health: We believe in the benefit of physical activity. Each day the fourth graders and teachers walk/run a mile. Students have a PE lesson with the PE Specialist once a week. Our counselor visits each classroom twice a month to give presentations on topics such as helping us learn how to organize our desks, how to take care of assignments and homework, how to get along with friends, how to treat others, and how to make good choices.

Remediation Techniques: Fourth grade students have the opportunity to work in small groups within the classroom. Our students also have educational aide time available to help them, one on one, with both reading and math concepts. Our students use the research based program to help them reach their individual reading goals. When necessary, a child may need to work with a speech or resource teacher and will be pulled out of the classroom for a short time with other children with similar needs.

Other Learning Opportunities: In the spring, fourth graders present a Utah program. Dressing in pioneer costume the children sing songs, recite poems, share information and history about our great state.
